friendster

I just updated my friendster and posted this picture of us in there. It was taken last Friday night, after the kids' trick or treat in the office.

Ivan and Me

I visited his page intending to write a testimonial for him and guess who I saw at the top of the testi... his ex-girlfriend and the picture they have together. Somehow it's unsettling to see the picture, even if it does not exist in his library of photos. More so, her testimonials.

Makes me wonder if she's thinking that I only updated my pictures because I saw her with him and I would be feeling a little bit insecure. Truth be told, I know where I stand. I don't compete with exes because they're history and I'm not. That normally, it wouldn't affect me. I never liked myself to be insecure or jealous. But I can't help it right now.

I think the green monster just bit me big time.

* * *

Speaking of testimonials, here is what I wrote about him.

If there was one person I would want to meet in the entire world, it would be the one person who wouldn’t make me cry, even if he has the power to do so.

And that’s Ivan.

Without conceit, he is the better version of me... My other half who makes me feel complete... The one who finishes my thoughts because he knows what I’m thinking… The one who doesn’t balk at my assertiveness, but support and encourage me… The one who shares my love and appreciation for music and books, who knows the value and importance of family.

The one person I can be sappy with because he is as sappy and as mushy as me… Ergo, he understands… The one who taught me the younger doesn’t mean immature and that when you know, you just do. That there is such a thing called “soul mates” and that I am the yin to his yang.

Drits. My big lug. My baby.

I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.

quitting

I said it before, and I'm standing by what I said.

As of 12:01am (or there abouts), 30 October 2005, I had my last ciggy infront of my boyfriend in Starbucks, Megamall.

23 and a half hours later, deep in the night. I am craving for a yosi stick.

Ivan never asked me to quit smoking. I told him I wanted to for the following reasons: (1) he doesn't smoke, (2) his mom doesn't want a girl to smoke, and (3) my parents are asking me to quit. Most importantly, I made a promise that I would quit when I have a boyfriend.

* * *

Now, we're both official in our respective sides of the family. He has met my younger brother and as I expected, they hit it off very well. Now, we're thinking of a best time to let him meet my parents. Originally, we were gunning at my birthday so that everybody will be relaxed. Looks like, it's going to be this weekend. He says he wants to go to mass with me and my family this Saturday.

Last night, his mom asked for my celfone number and texted me, saying she's eager to meet me.

Ok, that's enough to make me crave for another stick.

Gawd, I hope she likes me.

* * *

I've never intentionally introduced my exs to any of my friends before. Except for Ivan.

In a span of three days, he has met my closest friend in the whole world, Cookie, and her boyfriend Brian. He has met my college friend, Anna. He is going to meet the rest of the horde on my birthday and the officemates, well, he met them long before he met me.

I used to compartamentalize my life. Not allowing my friends to overlap with work or with the boyfriend. I have always felt that I wouldn't want my friends at work, nor should my boyfriend be close to my friends.

Now, I just can't wait for him to be an integral part of every aspect in my life.

* * *

I hope my resolve to quit stays with me.

Because he is definitely worth it.

lucky

"I finally met him."

"Who?"

"The one person who wouldn't make me cry even though he has the power to do so."

=)

just when you thought

Just when you thought you had it all figured out…

  • Someone comes along and makes you realize that there are no such things as infallible rules like, "no office romance" or "no dating younger men."

  • It only takes a second (or a movie) to know that you like someone more than just a friend or an officemate.

  • That you can have the most intellectual conversation in the midst of a joke, pun, or banter.

  • Unintentionally, you slip about your innermost feelings but are too dense to notice the slip that the other person made because you’re too busy rationalizing and figuring out a way out just in case s/he realizes it.

  • That the period of time might not be a factor because when you know, you just do.
Just when I thought I can never be sappy or romantic again, I suddenly am.

Just when I thought I’d be single and loving it, someone comes along and makes me want to be a significant other.

Just when I thought I’d always be the friend and not the girlfriend, I just might be.

status

Last night's conversation with a friend made me think about why I have been complacent about my civil status... Single, unattached, and loving it.

For the first time in my life, I don't mind being alone. I have come to accept my single state, live with it, and embrace it. The hassle of meeting new guys and dating tired me out in the last six years that I've been doing it. And coming into terms with my singlehood, why should I rock the boat?

But then again, I can't just think of the now. I mean, at the stage of my life when my friends are married (or soon to be married), shouldn't I proactively search for the one? I honestly don't want to spend the rest of my life old, shriveled, and alone.

Given my vast dating experiences (mostly bad ones!) and three ex-boyfriends to boot do not add up to the fact that I'm out of the game. However, these experiences taught me not to settle for anything less than what I deserve. It sounds arrogant, I know, but since dreaming is for free, why shouldn't I aim for the stars? I've become more choosy, compared to before, with the man I wish to spend the rest of my life with (and less proactive in searching for him.) I realized I value my time too much to waste it in the dating game, wherein I'd know five minutes on the date if it's meant to be developed into a relationship, or just a good f*ck.

I've been suggested a couple of times to "speed date" -- a new dating scheme wherein you'd get together with a guy for five minutes before moving on to your next date. In an hour, you'd end up having 12 dates. This would be ideal for me, given the previous paragraph, but I don't like the idea of sharing "my boys" to 11 other women on the same night. Call me old-fashioned, or plain selfish. Besides, the fast paced scheme is intended for a short-lived fantasy romance (if you're lucky to even get there!) or a romp between the sheets (more of a guy perspective.)

I know I don't want to be in a relationship just for the sake of having a boyfriend. If I do get involved, I know it's bound for something long lasting and hopefully a pair of rings. I'm too old to be in a relationship and just see where it goes. I think I'm mature enough to know the difference between a good-time-boyfriend and the man I wish to spend the rest of my life with.

I've rode too many busses where I got off at the wrong stop, or just circled around from where it picked me up. This time around, I want to make sure of where I'm going, and if the bus is headed toward that direction, before I even step on it.

Re-reading what I had just written, I'd probably scare any guy contemplating on just getting to know me via dating. But then again, if he's not mature to handle commitment, he's not mature enough to handle me. If he's not ready to commit and risk, what's the point in being in a relationship?

I'm not too closed-minded and stupid to think that the next relationship I'd be in would lead to the altar the day after (look what happened to my last relationship!) but I do want to feel that the relationship is headed towards a future and not just the now (and the next two years of my life.) The exchange of vows may happen five years down the road, but, at least, the direction is geared towards that. I simply hate to think that I'd spend two years of my life with a guy in a relationship that's doomed from the start.

In short, I want a mature, committed, imperfect man, who would love my imperfections, type-a personality, and make an effort to be in a relationship with me. And while he's not around the corner or headed my way, I'll enjoy being a workaholic corporate chick and spending time with my family and friends -- the people who are forever there and love me as I am.

post sucks

OK. I re-read my last post and it definitely suck.

Obviously, my sleep-deprived mind wasn't functioning very well, after, what my boss calls it, "my baptism of fire."

Tomorrow, I'll be left all alone again since my counterpart (BM) is on mandatory two weeks leave and our boss's (JR) is on her birthday leave. Of course, BM's mandatory two weeks is actually three weeks considering the holidays declared on the first week of November.

This translates to a very hectic day at work (God knows what time I'll be having lunch) and decorating her work area prior to her going to work on Friday.

My hell day turned to hell week.

* * *

Speaking of my boss's birthday tomorrow, I organized a surprise birthday party for her at work earlier this afternoon. It was a potluck celebration cause I'm still broke and so is BM. We had chocolate cake, butter cake, decadent cake, coffee crumble cake, chocolate mousse, and seven different flavors of ice cream. Some folks brought peachy-peachy, bibingka, and brownies.

It was a success. A lot of people were there and a lot of food, too! There's still some left for dessert tomorrow.

Short in saying, everybody had sugar rush at 5pm in the 16th floor.

* * *

Really busy since my time here at my new work. If I think about it, my life is pretty boring considering that it's just work and home. I treasure my weekends because it's the only time I get to sleep late and bum around the house.

Quite frankly, I don't miss going out or gimicking.

I do miss seeing my friends sometimes.

Doesn't matter. I'll be celebrating my birthday in three weeks and will be having a party and everyone is invited.

* * *

Ok, my feet are killing me. Wearing three-inch heels in 12-hour work days are a no-no, especially if that day involves running around the office and stores just to make sure that everything is set for my boss's surprise birthday party.

I wish I'd been able to get myself a foot spa. Was hoping to catch one at 9pm tonight, but I'm too tired to walk all the way to the mall.

I'll just wait for my bank car and soak my feet when I get home.

* * *

I miss my bed.

holding the fort

My team is composed of our OIC (because she hasn't be formally assigned as the head of our group), an officer, and myself.

Today, I was the only one in our group present in the office because the other two committed to volunteer work outside the office (which is part of the company's community service.) So instead of reporting to work, the two had to go to Operation Smile, while I held down the fort.

I have to admit that today was very challenging considering that I'm still new to the group and I was left with my own resources to resolve both production and uat problems. I wasn't apprehensive about the whole idea of being left on my own until Sunday afternoon.

And so I reported to work yesterday (on a freaking Sunday, the holiest day I promised not to work) for four hours just to lessen my load for today. That didn't help much because most of the activities I have yet to do needed interaction with the users and our Singapore counterparts.

Needless to say, I had to report to work before 8:30am... I arrived 7:56am. I sent out more 61 emails (71 in total as of 10:12pm), which is one-seventh of my total sent items in the three months I've been here. I didn't get to eat until 2:00pm (with no breakfast, mind you!) and didn't get to take a yosi break until 5:00pm. Which directly translates to 1 meal, 1 coffee, and no smokes for 8 hours straight.

I still can't believe I survived that.

Yet, 12 hours later, I'm still in the office. Replying to the email that I neglected to reply to earlier in the day.

Honestly, I'm thankful for the opportunity (to cut down on smoking!) that I got today. I feel a little bit proud that I was able to hold the fort, despite a little disappointed that one of my greatest task today didn't push through (for reasons beyond my control.)

I'm happy. I'm overworked. I'm great. =)

officially over

It's officially over.

At least, the fancy I feel for "the guy" at work.

He thinks the the world revolves around him. He feels that women worship the ground he walks on. He imagines that people exist to serve him.

In short, he's overbearing.

* * *

Good luck to me, I've been told by an officemate of mine.

I had a meeting with E.L. this afternoon and after helping me out sort some things, I told him I'd spot him a cig as "thank you".

He asked me when I started smoking, I told him the following points in summary:
  • I first tasted yosi when I had my senior syndrome in college.
  • I've smoked once in a blue moon since then.
  • It wasn't until my 2nd job and my break-up with the last ex that I really smoked daily.
  • I would quit smoking when I have another boyfriend.
Ok, the last one sounded like an out-right lie. I mean, if I wanted to quit, I'd quit now.

He pointed out that the last thing I mentioned, the chances of me ever having a boyfriend, had dramatically decreased now that I've joined our company. This is, of course, considering the number of unmarried women in the office (in high places, if I may add!)

I told him, it has dramatically decreased when I got my masters degree. Now, it's consistently diminishing as the years go by.

Oh, gawd. Did I just succumb to the thought of singlehood for life?

Ergo, good luck to me!

* * *

I've received two shocking news this week.

The first one involved my closest friend (ever!) texting me that she's likely getting married in October or November 2006. If you've been reading me, you'd know who she is. If not, read this.

Ok, I'm more alone now than I ever was in my entire life. Granted, I'm happy for her. It's just the selfish single side of me that isn't.

The second involves a friend scheduled to be married in December, who I'd be a bridesmaid for the nth time, texting me that she called the wedding off due to reasons she wouldn't disclose just yet.

Ok, that sucks (for her ex-husband-to-be.) But my take on it is better now than after the wedding.

If I do the math, that's one less and one more single friends of mine.

The world is once more balanced.

bizarre love triangle

I never expected to fall in love in the way I did and in a snap. I never thought of falling in love with a friend, a very close friend.

Every time I think of you I'd get a shot right through on to my bottom pool. It's no problem of mine, but it's a problem I find. Living a life that I can't leave behind.

There’s no sense in telling me the wisdom of a fool won’t set you free. But that's the way that it goes and that’s what nobody knows. And everyday my confusion grows.

Patrick was a cousin’s classmate and I had met him in their high school dance. I can only remember acknowledging his presence in the introduction. I was not attracted to him at that time maybe because I was too busy dancing and having fun. We slowly became friends after that. I didn’t think we'd get closer to that of being acquaintances. We started going out as a group and I found him funny and easy to talk to. Considering he was two years older than me, he easily became the big brother I never had.

I never even considered him as a crush material. I was contented with our brother-sister-friends relationship. I didn’t know things would be more than what they seem until the night of my school’s dance. For me, that dance would be like all the others that had passed. I knew I would enjoy the night dancing with my friends and cousins. However, I didn’t count on falling in love with him.

We didn’t get to spend that much time that night since he had a date with a girl named Michelle. I had an eerie feeling of dislike towards this girl because I felt she didn’t deserve him. Though we were not able to dance that night, we had a chance to talk in the car on our way home. Despite my cousins’ presence, it felt like there was just the two of us. It was then that I realized that I already fell for my “big brother.” I fell in love with his thoughtfulness, kindness, and his being so sweet. I fell in love with him more because he listened. He listened to me when I told him about what was bothering me then among other things. He made me feel important and so much like his age.

I feel fine and I feel good, I feel like I never should. Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say. Why can't we be ourselves like we we're yesterday?

I’m not sure what this could mean. I don’t think you’re what you seem. I do admit to myself that if I have someone else then I'll never see just what we're meant to be.

Even though we were studying in different schools, we had a constant communication through small notes passed through my cousin, occasional phone calls of hi’s and hello’s, and rare opportunities of going out as a group. I was happy with our relationship, although it was not the boyfriend-girlfriend type. However something happened that made my happiness short lived.

Shortly after Valentine's Day, Patrick and I met through one of my cousin’s party. I was surprised to see Michelle, the date he had in my high school dance, with him. I felt a slight twinge in my heart but it was melted by his easy smile when he saw me come in the door. He went up to me and said, “I’ll talk to you later, ok?”

“Ok,” I nodded. I was wondering for the time being what it was that he wanted to talk to me about. However, I didn’t expect the shock I would be receiving. Later on, when we had the chance to talk alone, he told me that he decided to court Michelle last Valentine’s day. I felt stunned not because I was expecting that he would court me or something but that I had never expected that he would be somebody else’s guy.

“But she’s not fair,” I remember him telling me. “Everything is swell when we’re alone together but she ignores me when her friends are around. Just like tonight.”

“Maybe it’s her funny way of showing that she likes you and that she’s simply playing it cool,” I said, as I felt a pierce run through my heart.

“Denise, I really need your help,” he told me. “I honestly don't know what to do.”

Swallowing my pride and hurting inside, I told him, “If you love her...”

“I do.”

“I really think she likes you.” God, what am I saying? “She wouldn’t go out with you if she doesn’t right? You'll have to be patient I guess.”

“I’m known for my patience.” After a pause, he turned to me and asked, “How about your crush? I haven’t heard you talk about him for quite some time now.”

“My...ah...crush?” I stammered. I didn't know what to say because who he's referring to, is none other than himself. I thought of telling him, “Oh, I think he’s okay. He just courted another girl and he’s telling me all about it. Right now, actually.”

Instead, I stammered, “I..ah..Last..I..ah..heard was he's ok.”

“Is the guy courting you or not?” he grinned.

“Well, no.” I murmured. “You know my parents won’t allow me to have a boyfriend till I'm eighteen,” I gave a small smile.

“What's wrong?” he frowned.

“I...ah,” I looked at his eyes and they were filled with concern. Brotherly concern. “Nothing.”

“Oh, come on, Denise,” he smiled. “You listened to my problems when I needed someone to talk to. Don't you think it’s just right and fair if I do the same to you?”

“Yes.”

“Then what is this about?”

I couldn’t tell him so I ended up saying, “Nothing.” I knew he would have persisted asking me what’s wrong, fortunately, his date came along and asked him to dance. I knew by the look in his eyes that he was torn. I gave him a small smile and nodded for him to go, knowing that it was important for him to be with her.

That was the first time I cried over a guy. Though I tried to be happy on the outside, I felt my heart breaking inside. I asked myself, why did I have to fall in love with somebody who treats me like a little sister. Why did I have to fall in love with a guy like Patrick?

The answer was simple. Anyone could easily fall in love with a cute, smart, kind guy. Patrick is the kind of guy who worms into girls’ hearts, endearing himself to them in the process. What was more special about him is that he never took advantage of the girls he knew who liked him.

A month later, he found out that I had feelings for him. It happened before the classes ended. When I found out that he knew, I stayed clear from him, primarily because I was embarrassed. I also knew I would hurt more if I stayed. I found out from my cousin that they, Michelle and Patrick, were already a couple.

I didn’t think I would be hearing from him since I avoided his phone calls already. It came a surprise when my cousin handed me a letter. I knew from the penmanship on the envelope who it came from. I was so scared to open it that I didn’t till late that night. In the solitary confines of my bedroom with no one to see or hear me, I opened the letter and started reading. I was unconscious of the tears that slowly fell from my eyes, as I slowly memorized the words he’d written.

Denise,

I really don't know what to say, except that I'll take it as a compliment. Thank you. Do you know what my first reaction was when I found out? I thought, it just couldn’t be because I love someone else. And you also told me you couldn’t have a boyfriend. I just hope you'll understand me, like I understand you. I can’t simply have two hearts...if only it's possible.

You’re beautiful, smart, and charming. I'm sure you can find other guys more deserving and qualified than I am. Just remember that LOVE will come at the most unexpected time and place.

Take Care,
Patrick

Every time I see you falling, I'll get down on my knees and pray. I’m waiting for that final moment you'll say the words that I can't say.

internet once more!

Finally.

I moved into the area of my predecessor. I feel a little bit sad that I am taking her place, even though her leaving was her own decision (she’s migrating to the US.) I know for a fact that she wouldn’t be leaving the company if it wasn’t for the US opportunity being presented to her by her brother.

A person’s loss is truly another one’s gain.

To be truthful, I prefer my old area, where I have stayed for the past 9 weeks, to where I am situated right now. However, I’m not complaining that I have Internet access here and a desktop with a nineteen-inch screen, compared to the old laptop that I was using for the past couple of weeks.

I’ve honestly learned to see the brighter side of things since I’ve moved to this company.

However, I have a bit of trouble fitting in with all the Type A personalities existing in the group (considering I’m Type A myself.) I never used to make friends in my previous job. I thought friends would happen if they do – I just make sure I do a good job and be recognized for my merits. Nowadays, I’m making an effort in making friends, aside from the fact that I’m trying to do a good job in the things assigned to me (hoping I won’t do anything stupid!)

I guess the effort comes from wanting to stay here longer than I have stayed in my previous jobs, 3 years and 2.5 years, respectively.

Somehow, I want to grow old here.

* * *

The crushie is still around. Except, he’s getting to be annoying as each day passes.

Primarily because I saw him with a chick on the night he was celebrating his post-birthday celebration with his group, which coincided with the night we did the send-off for my predecessor. And the fact that he had to rub that "he was with his girl" the next day.

Or maybe because he thinks I’m his genie to accommodate his every whim/wish.

Or the fact that he "stole" the cd I wanted to listen to earlier this afternoon from my stash (and a couple of others.) Saying he wanted to listen to the song he listened with his girl last Sunday on the beach.

Is he a jerk or simply insensitive?

He does, however, owe me coffee or dinner. I might as well ask for somewhere expensive. =)
